Chapter 30: The Road Trip

We drove because he hates to fly.

Fourteen hours from Minneapolis to Denver and he wanted to do it in one shot.

I drove the first six.

He sat in the passenger seat with his right leg stretched out and the window down and his hand on my knee.

Iowa went by. Then Nebraska.

Somewhere past Omaha my phone rang on the dash and it was Mom.

I put it on speaker.

"Hi, baby."

"Hi, Mom."

"Where are you."

"Outside Omaha."

"You're driving to Colorado."

"We're driving to Colorado."

"We."

"Logan's in the car."

"Hi, Margo," he said.

"Hi, honey. Is she letting you drive."

"She's not letting me do anything."

"That's how you know she likes you."

"Mom."

"I'm just saying. Put your seatbelt on."

"I have my seatbelt on."

"Not you."

"He has his seatbelt on, Mom."

Margo talked for twenty minutes. She asked about the leg and the hotel and whether we'd booked two rooms.

I said we'd booked two rooms.

Logan looked out the window and didn't say anything.

When she hung up he turned his head.

"Two rooms," he said.
