Chapter 11: Slow
That night he undressed her.
There were no commands, no thread, no chains.
He knelt on the bed in front of her while she sat with her knees folded.
He took the pins out of her braid one at a time and laid them on the sheet.
"Tomorrow or the day after," he said, "the Marshal will be here."
"I know."
"I don't want to waste tonight on anything but you."
She looked at his face by the red lamp.
It was the face of a man who thought he might be about to lose everything.
He had decided to spend what was left of it well.
"Then take your time," said Luan.
He slid the robe off her shoulders.
He kissed her collarbone, and the swell of her breast, and the soft curve under it.
His mouth closed on her nipple and she sighed, her head tipping back, her fingers in his black hair.
"Slow," she whispered.
"As slow as you like."
He laid her back on the pillows.
She watched him undress, too.
The lamplight slid over the long muscles of his back, the old scars, and the gold in the middle of his chest.
When he came down over her, skin against skin, she wrapped her arms around his neck and held on.
It was a different kind of heat.
It wasn't the frantic hunger of the snow terrace or the sharp edge of the pool.
