Chapter 7: The Throne
He told her about Qingsha on his knees at the foot of the throne.
The Hall of Black Lanterns stood empty at midnight.
A hundred black lamps burned with a low red flame, and the throne rose above them on nine steps of obsidian.
Luan sat on its edge in her maid's robe with her feet on his shoulders.
He had asked to say it before anything else.
"The Jade Court burned Mount Yan first," he said. "My mountain. Twelve thousand of my people, in one night, most of them asleep."
His hands rested on her ankles, and he was looking at the floor.
"Three days later I led my army to Qingsha, the mortal city that fed their legions. I burned it."
"How many?"
"Forty thousand. Nine thousand were children. I counted afterward."
She did not look away.
"I'm not going to tell you it was grief," he said. "It was. It does not matter."
His hands tightened on her ankles.
"I did it, and I knew what I was doing. I would have gone on to the next city if you had not come."
"I don't remember it," said Luan.
"I know."
"I'm not going to tell you it's all right."
"I would not trust you if you did."
She put her hand under his chin and lifted his face.
His red eyes were steady.
"Then we both know what you are," she said. "And you are on your knees in front of me anyway."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because it's the only place in this world I want to be."
Her tension gave way.
Then she leaned back on the cold black stone and pulled her robe up over her knees, then her thighs, then her hips.
