Chapter 23: The Treaty of Silverwater
The bridge at Halren Ford had been swept clear of ice for the signing.
A late snow was falling on it again.
A table stood in the middle of the span, exactly where Elior had laid down his sword.
On the north bank waited Sigrun and the lords of Norvald in black furs.
On the south bank waited the captains of the left wing and the archbishop.
The old lord from his father's council stood with them.
Between them, over the grey water, nobody was saying a word.
Elior sat on one side of the table in the indigo coat.
A plain gold circlet rested on his hair.
Teodric sat on the other, big and calm, with the Book of the Dead closed beside his elbow.
Two clerks read the treaty aloud, one in each language of the border, and it was short.
The wagons would go north every month until harvest, free.
The border forts would go back to the crown of Savenne, and Norvald would keep its own.
No child of either house would ever again be held as a pledge.
Nothing else was in it.
