Chapter 19: The North Road
They found the cart at noon, forty miles up the north road, where the road ran into a ford.
Sorrel saw it first from the dragon's neck, a line of small black shapes crawling toward the river.
There was an ox cart with its tarpaulin lashed down, a closed carriage behind it, and twenty soldiers of the capital in grey cloaks.
Ronan came down in front of them without a sound.
The road shook, and the ox bellowed, and the soldiers in grey stopped dead with their hands on their hilts.
Sorrel slid down his shoulder and landed on her feet.
Behind her, the dragon folded in on himself with a rush of heat, and Ronan stood there in a borrowed cloak, bare-armed, with his wing furled to a dark line across his back.
"Drop your swords," he said.
He did not raise his voice.
Twenty swords hit the road.
The carriage door opened.
Edmund climbed out with his burned hand bound in a silk scarf.
Linden climbed out after him.
She wore a traveling cloak over the plain brown dress, and her face was grey.
"Brother," Edmund said. "I can explain."
"You can explain to the road."
Ronan walked up the line of grey soldiers, and every one of them stepped back to let him through.
At the roadside, a carter and two women with baskets had stopped to stare.
"Edmund Aldermere," Ronan said, loud enough for them. "You held a lord of Caerlund at rope's end. You took a house by arms. You were party to the poisoning of your king."
