Chapter 28: Woodward
Frankie came down the steel stairs and across to the office in a towel, with her hair dripping.
"Who calls at seven?"
"Dealer of the Year."
"Who is?"
"Me. Us. The gala's at the yacht club." I held up the phone like it might still be talking. "May 6. Next year."
Frankie stood there in the towel and did the math in about one second.
"Three years," she said. "To the day. He said three years at the tent."
"He did."
"And we said the flagship by then."
"We did."
She pointed at me, dripping on the office floor.
"Then we've got eleven months, Brannock."
It took ten.
In March of 2026, the bank that had swallowed Carter's debts put the last of Hensley Auto Group up for sale.
Eight dealerships.
One auction.
They held it on the showroom floor of Hensley Chevrolet, on Woodward Avenue, under the mezzanine.
The brass HENSLEY letters were still over the door.
Somebody had taken down the cowboy-hat poster and left a pale square on the wall where it had hung.
There were about a hundred people in folding chairs where the trucks used to be.
Big dealer groups from Ohio and Indiana. A man from a national chain with a pocket square. Bankers. Lawyers. Two reporters.
