Chapter 29: The Apology
"Which table?" I said.
Carter blinked.
He'd wanted something else from me. Anger. A shove. A scene at the rail with reporters below.
"Does it matter?"
"I want to tell the kitchen," I said. "The door hits the back of one chair at that club. I'd hate for you to miss it."
For a second his smile slipped.
Then he put it back on.
"See you on the sixth, cousin."
He went down the glass stairs.
He walked across the showroom floor past a hundred people who didn't look at him, and out under the brass letters.
Nobody held the door.
We took the keys to the flagship on the first of May.
Five days before the gala.
The whole Eight Mile staff came up Woodward for it.
Three hundred people now, across fourteen stores in Michigan.
Plus about thirty of the Hensley people who'd been running the flagship for the bank and didn't know if they still had jobs.
They stood on one side of the showroom.
Our people stood on the other.
Pop sat in the middle, in a brand-new lawn chair Frankie had bought him for the occasion.
"I told you," he said. "Buy me a new one."
Frankie was about to tell the Hensley people that every one of them could stay if they wanted to, at the same pay, as long as they could write on a windshield with a grease pencil.
