Chapter 31: String Lights

"Saturday," I said. "This Saturday?"

"This Saturday."

"That's three days."

"You sold twenty-nine cars in three weeks once. You can get married in three days." She pointed at our table. "Everybody we'd invite is right here. Pop's got a suit. You've got a suit. It's the same suit."

Pop banged his cane on the floor.

"Not my suit," he said. "I'm walking her. I need it."

"Then I'll rent one," I said.

Four hundred people in black tie were watching us.

Frankie didn't care.

She never had.

"Is that a yes, Brannock?"

"It was always going to be a yes."

She kissed me in front of every car dealer in Michigan, and Doug Hensley started the applause.

We got married on the Eight Mile lot that Saturday, at seven in the evening.

Doug and the porters moved every car on the lot to the back row by four.

He washed every one of them first.

We put out two hundred folding chairs from the church and the funeral home and the bar down the street.

The string lights were the old ones.

Frankie had put a new bulb in the one that had been out for three years.

"For the occasion," she said.

The tow truck was parked at the front, washed and waxed, with white ribbons on the boom.

That was the altar.

My mother stood in front of it in navy silk with a small book in her hands.

She'd gotten ordained online on Thursday.

"I'm a nurse," she said, when Frankie asked if that was legal. "I can do anything with a certificate."

All our people came.

The woman in the church hat. The man in the orange hat from the auction. The mother with the minivan and all four of her kids. The man in the Lions cap. The salesman in the purple tie and his family from Ferndale. Half our people from fourteen stores, and the whole night shift from my mother's ER.

And in the second row, in her scrubs, with a box of tissues already open on her lap, the nurse who'd bought the lime-green Kia three years ago.

Doug sat in the very last row, in his porter's polo.

He'd asked.

At seven the boom box played something with a steel guitar.

Everybody stood.

Frankie came out of the office door on Pop's arm.
