Chapter 21: The Fall
Jonas rose slowly from beside Britta with both hands in the air.
He did not argue.
I heard the boots of the two officers come in behind the deputy chief, and the creak of leather as they drew.
"Chief," I said.
"You're standing in my father's hall."
"Mrs. Haugland called me from her car," the deputy chief said, coldly.
"She said your bodyguard was threatening her."
"She called you from her car," I said.
"Before she walked into my house alone."
"She was frightened."
"Of a man who was at the garage with me, in front of a dozen witnesses, when she left the boardroom."
"Then why did she come here?"
The deputy chief did not answer.
On the marble floor, Britta moaned and rolled, and I heard her fingernails scrape the stone.
"Chief," she gasped.
"Do something."
I turned my head slowly toward the woman in the doorway.
"You promised," Britta said, louder, with the pain ripping her voice apart.
