Chapter 17: What He Gave Up
Peter came to the lake cottage on Tuesday night, in the rain, with a manila folder inside his jacket.
I saw his truck lights come down through the trees, and I stayed on the porch swing.
Joanne opened the door before he knocked.
He stood on the mat with water running off his hair and no glasses on.
"Mrs. Brightwell," he said. "I need to speak to your husband. I'll say it on the porch if you'd rather I didn't come in."
"Raymond," Joanne said over her shoulder, without moving. "You'll want to hear this."
Mr. Brightwell came out in his cardigan.
He stopped when he saw who it was, and the old hardness came back into his shoulders.
"You have the nerve," he said.
"I do not. I have the paper."
Peter took the folder from his jacket and held it out in both hands.
"My mother offered me the house yesterday."
