I went to the cottage on Thursday to get my duffel.
That was the reason I gave Joanne, and she nodded at me over her coffee with an expression I chose not to read.
The blue door was open a hand's width.
Peter was in the kitchen on his knees, taping up a cardboard box.
The woodstove was cold.
The counter where he had made me eggs was covered in envelopes.
There were eleven of them, each with a name written across the front in his square print.
"You're early," he said, without turning around. "I wasn't going to be dressed."
"You're dressed."
"I wasn't going to be shaved."
He wasn't.
His glasses were pushed up in his hair, and there was a gray cast under his eyes.
I looked at the envelopes.
"What are those?"
"Back pay," he said.
