Chapter 15: Second Chance

"No," Dane said.

They were in the car outside the foundation, with the engine off and the rain tapping on the roof.

"You haven't heard the plan," said Iris.

"I've heard enough. You want to walk in there alone and let him put his hands on you."

"I want to tell Philip that I'll marry him after all."

Dane turned in the driver's seat and looked at her.

"He's going to lie to me again either way," Iris said. "This way I choose where I'm standing when he does."

"And me?"

"You're the mistake I'm throwing out in front of his friends."

His mouth twisted.

"Fine," he said. "Everyone already thinks I'm the worst thing in your life. It's the easiest part I've ever played."

"That's not what I think."

"I know."

He said it so quietly that she looked away first.

"Come in when you see me cry," she said. "Say something awful. Then let them walk you out."

"Iris."

"What?"

"If he touches you wrong, I'm coming through the glass."

"If he touches me wrong, I'll do it myself," she said, and got out of the car.

The foundation lobby was all marble and white lilies, and forty staff members stood at their desks pretending not to look at her.

Philip waited by the fountain in a navy coat with a bouquet of white roses.

He looked tired and sorry and handsome.

If she had not seen the corridor tape, she would have believed every line of his face.

"Iris."

"Philip."

"I've been sick about it." He took a step toward her, stopped, and held out the roses. "I should never have said those things on camera. Mom told me to protect the family, and I panicked. I'm a coward. I know it."
