Chapter 8: Marry or Lose It

The Kellaway Foundation board met on the top floor of a glass tower on Friday at ten.

Eight members sat around a long table.

Aunt Sylvia sat at the head of it, in a cream suit, with her hands folded and a box of tissues placed close to Iris's empty chair.

Iris walked in on Odette's arm at five past.

Dane followed three feet behind, in a plain dark suit, with his hands clasped in front of him.

Several heads turned.

A few of the board members stared openly at him, and one of them whispered, "That's him."

"Sit," Sylvia said gently. "Iris, sweetheart, we're all here because we love you."

"I know why you're here," Iris said, and sat.

Daphne slid into the chair behind her and squeezed her shoulder.

Iris smiled at her.

It was the hardest smile she had ever made.

Sylvia rose and read the motion in her warm, sorrowful voice.

She spoke of Benton's death and the strain on his daughter.

She spoke of the video, the hotel room, the public humiliation of the family name.

"A young woman in this much distress," she finished, "cannot be trusted to manage a foundation of this size. I move that the board find Iris Kellaway unfit, and that I remain her trustee until she is twenty-eight."

"Seconded," said a man at the far end.

Iris stood up.

She had been practicing on the drive.

"Before you vote," she said, "I want to show you what the foundation's own chairwoman didn't."

She set two folders on the table.

"The first is my blood test from Wednesday. A strong sedative, the same one found in Mr. Fairweather's blood. I was drugged at my own party."
