THE GODDESS'S FATHER A THIEF, ran the Herald's website, over my employee photo and a still of a ledger page.
Leopold had not waited for Friday.
I stood on the front steps of the house on Chestnut Street with a microphone from a local station shoved under my chin.
Perhaps thirty reporters filled the street, and the brick sidewalks had gone dark with their coats.
Tobias held an umbrella over me that nobody had asked for, and glared at a cameraman who had stepped on the hedge.
"Miss Orme," said the Herald's reporter, a tired woman with a notebook. "Is it true?"
"Yes."
The street went quiet in a way I had not heard since the boathouse.
"I am not here to defend my father," I said.
"He died twenty years ago on the roof of that building, and I was eight."
"Did he jump?"
"I don't know. I know what was said to him before he went up there."
