I read it four times sitting on the edge of my bed in my wrinkled uniform.
Then I called Dina.
"Did you know?"
"I found out when you did. I'm a society columnist, not a psychic." She was typing. I could hear it. "Etta. Every outlet in the city is running it. Nobody can figure out why."
"I can."
"Then tell me."
"No," I said. "Not yet."
"Okay," she said. "But when you can, I get it first."
Tuesday he didn't come to the boat.
The fish market lady asked where my handsome one was.
Lance posted a photo of himself in his father's office chair with the caption The future.
Somebody replied with the earrings clip. It got more likes.
Wednesday I came down the ramp at 6:50 and there was no one waiting at the bottom of my gangway.
My shoulders relaxed for the first time all morning.
At 7:08 the deckhand kid called up the ladder.
"Captain. Walk-on wants to know if he can come up at Bainbridge."
"Which walk-on?"
"The coffee guy." He paused. "He bought a ticket. He's sitting in the back row with no coffee or anything."
