Chapter 29: Chair
I stared down at the text.
Then I put the phone face down on the counter.
"What is it?" Rem said.
"They want to make me chair."
He folded the newspaper. It had been upside down the whole time.
"Of Conway Group."
"Of Conway Group."
"Do you want it?"
Nobody had asked me that. Not Walter, not the board, not the chair with his half-moon glasses.
"I want the pier," I said slowly. "I want the run. I want the boats to stop breaking down on the crew."
"Then you want it." He picked up my tea and handed it back to me. "Wear the uniform."
Monday at ten I walked into the thirtieth-floor boardroom in my navy jacket and four gold stripes.
This time nobody stood at the screen.
The chair stood up when I came in.
Then the man next to him. Then all of them, one by one, until fourteen people were on their feet around the walnut table.
I didn't know what to do with my hands.
So I put my cap on the table in front of the chair by the window.
"Not that one," the old chair said. He pulled out the big chair at the head of the table. "This one."
