Chapter 6: The 7:10
"Everything I own, your brother has seen," I said.
"Then that's a problem," he said, and walked out into the rain.
Monday at 6:40 I was in the wheelhouse of the Kittiwake with a thermos of bad coffee and my hair pinned under my cap.
Navy jacket. Four gold stripes on the cuffs I'd earned one sea-time hour at a time.
The old engineer stuck his head up the ladder.
"Morning, Captain. You look like you slept."
"I didn't."
"That's what I said. You look like you didn't."
The deckhand kid was nineteen and had heard about the bottle. He saluted me every time he walked past.
"Stop that," I said.
"Yes, Captain." He saluted.
At 6:58 the ticket booth lady called up on the radio.
"Etta, honey. You've got guests. With a camera."
I looked down at the car deck.
Liza Brewster was walking up the ramp in a white wool coat.
Behind her came a cameraman, a girl with a boom mic, and a director in a puffy vest.
By the time I got down the stairs, they'd set up a light beside the passenger stairs and were blocking half of it.
"Okay, Liza, from the top," the director said. "Big smile."
Liza turned to the camera and spread her arms toward the pier.
"Imagine waking up here. Right where the old ferry dock used to be. Private moorage. A rooftop spa. The Salt Pier, reborn."
"Where the old ferry dock used to be," I said.
She turned.
Her smile went wide and sweet.
"Etta. Oh my God. Is this your boat?"
"It's my run."
She looked me up and down. The jacket. The cap. The work boots.
"Cute costume. Do they let you pick the hat?"
"You're filming on a working car deck without a permit," I said. "You're blocking an emergency stair. You've got two minutes to pack up and get off my boat."
