Chapter 9: Terms
Rem didn't let go of my hand all the way to the car.
He held the door for me. He walked around. He got in.
Then he put both hands on the steering wheel and sat there.
The rain ticked on the roof.
"Fiancée," I said.
"I know."
"You didn't ask."
"I know." He dropped his head against the steering wheel. "I'm sorry. He looked at you like you were something on his shoe, and I wanted to wipe that look off his face. I should have asked."
"You kissed my finger in front of five hundred people."
"Was it too much?"
"Liza looked like she swallowed a fish hook. It was perfect." I turned in my seat. "But now your father thinks you'll fold."
"He's sure of it."
"Will you?"
He turned his head and looked at me in the dark.
"That depends on you."
My heart did something stupid.
"Say it plainly," I said. "I drive a boat. I like plain."
"Marry me. A real marriage, on paper. A license, a judge, a ring. We live in the same house, because he'll check." He held my eyes. "A year. Then a quiet divorce, and you walk away with whatever you want."
"I don't want anything."
"Everybody wants something."
"What do you get?"
"The chair. My father's company stays with somebody who builds things instead of selling them." He looked out at the wet street. "And the Conway deal dies forever, because I'm already married."
I almost laughed.
I bit my lip instead, so hard it hurt.
The Conway deal was sitting in his passenger seat in a red dress.
