Chapter 10: Tea with the Prince
Sevrin moved before the echo of the Prince's voice had died.
He tugged his shirt straight and shoved Briony behind a potted lemon tree.
Then he walked to the glasshouse door with his steward's coat over his arm.
She crouched in the dark with her skirts bunched in both fists and her heart in her mouth.
The door opened.
"Your Highness," said Sevrin.
His voice was flat and calm and exactly right.
"Under-steward Dray.
East gate."
"I know who you are.
I thought I heard someone."
"The vents, Your Highness.
The gardener asked me to close them before the dew.
I should have used the lantern."
There was a pause.
Briony pressed her knuckles against her mouth.
Through the leaves she saw the Prince's blue coat in the doorway, his hair rumpled, his face worried and gentle.
He was looking past the steward into the green dark.
He was looking at the lemon tree.
"Of course," said Anselm.
"Forgive me.
I can't sleep these nights."
"Nor can I, Your Highness."
"Then we're two of a kind.
Good night, Dray."
"Good night."
The Prince's footsteps went away along the gravel.
They paused once, a few yards off.
Then they went on.
