Chapter 14: Walk Out
I did not answer his texts.
There were eleven by Sunday night.
I read the first one on the bathroom floor, with Britt sitting against the door, eating cereal from the box.
HENRIK: I'm sorry. I should have told you.
HENRIK: Tell me what you need.
HENRIK: The sentence is over. Really over. I filed it myself.
"Is he groveling?" Britt asked.
"He's using full sentences."
"That's groveling. For him that's on his knees."
I put the phone face down on the tile.
"He let me confess to a whole arena," I said. "He knew it was me before I opened my mouth."
"And he stood in front of you."
"I know what he did."
"So what's the problem?"
I pulled my knees up.
"The problem is that I liked it," I said. "Being picked. I liked it so much I never asked why."
Britt said nothing for a moment.
"You're allowed to be mad and in love," she said. "You can do both at once. People do it all the time."
