Chapter 22: Showcase Night
By seven o'clock on Saturday the arena had never been so loud.
I stood in the skaters' locker room in a pale green dress with my braid pinned up, listening to four thousand people stamp their feet.
Four thousand.
Britt had refreshed the ticket page nine times before breakfast.
She stood behind me now, doing my zipper, and every time the crowd roared she squeezed my shoulder.
"You're going to be sick," she said.
"I'm not going to be sick."
"You're green. You match the dress."
"Britt."
"I love you. I'm going to be sick for you."
Someone knocked.
I opened the door a crack.
My mother stood in the hallway in her good wool coat, with a bakery box tied in string.
She looked up at the arena lights and then at me.
Her face did what it had done at every competition since I was seven.
