Chapter 10: The Offer
Delphine slid a cream folder across my prep table.
"A hundred and fifty thousand dollars," she said. "A cookbook with your recipes, and a ghostwriter, and a publisher in New York."
I opened the folder.
It was the nicest offer anyone had ever made me.
It was also nine pages long.
"Who's on the cover?" I said.
"A model. Warm, approachable, athletic." She waved her hand. "A woman who looks like she cooks."
"I look like I cook."
"You look like a chef," Delphine said gently. "The brand needs a certain image."
I turned to page six.
"Clause four," I read out loud.
"'The chef agrees never to appear in any photograph, video or promotional material with the players or the sponsors.'"
"For your protection."
"Whose protection?"
"Ms. Prendergast." She leaned forward, her voice soft. "I'm trying to help you."
"You are a talented woman in an unusual position. The attention is not kind."
"You and the captain are a story the internet would love to destroy."
