Chapter 18: Takes Up the Room

We dropped Pavel at his apartment at two in the morning.

He woke up long enough to say goodnight to my knife roll and stumbled inside with it.

Doran carried me over his own threshold, because he said he wanted to.

Then he went through the brick house turning on every lamp.

He turned on the hall light, the kitchen light, and the lamp beside the bed.

He switched on the overhead in the bedroom and stood there with his hand on the switch, looking at me.

"All of it," he said. "I want to see all of it."

"The light is very bright."

"Good."

He crossed the room and kneeled in front of me.

Even kneeling, he put his eyes level with my chest.

He unbuttoned my coat and slid it off my shoulders.

"Arms up."

I lifted my arms, and he pulled my shirt over my head and dropped it on the floor.

My bra came next, and he unhooked it with one hand and let it fall.

He looked at my breasts, heavy and freckled, and his breath caught in his throat.

"You've never once hidden from me," he said. "Don't start now."

"I'm not."

"Good girl."

He laid his hands on my belly, soft and round with silver lines across it.

He bent and put his mouth on the lowest stretch mark.
