Chapter 20: Maintenance
I read the email twice on the tarmac.
Then I opened my list.
Johnny looked over my shoulder at the screen.
"What do you need from me?"
"Your truck," I said. "And your phone. And every player who owns a grill."
Lulu woke up between us, hat crooked.
"Are we home?"
"We're home, bug. And tomorrow we're having a party in a parking lot."
She sat straight up.
"With hot dogs?"
"With everything."
By six that night, Stevie and I had a map of the practice facility spread across our kitchen table.
The practice rink sat across the plaza from the Glacier Center. Its own ice. Its own stands. A parking lot that held four hundred cars.
My father owned the arena's concourse. He didn't own the lot.
The city did.
"The permit lady likes me," Stevie said. "I taped her son's ankle at a clinic in October. He scored on the captain."
"Call her."
"Already did. We're good till midnight."
The families still had their tickets. Johnny had paid for them in January.
