Chapter 21: Five

I found Lulu in the Ice Box at eight, drawing a cake with eleven layers.

I crouched next to her little chair and held up the purple card.

"Bug. Did you make this?"

She looked at it. Then she looked at me, and her chin went up.

"My teacher helped with the letters. I did the drawing."

"How did it get to Grandpa?"

"I gave it to the silver-pin man. In the hallway. He's always in the hallway." She went back to her cake. "He said he'd give it to Grandpa himself. He promised. In front of me."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She considered this with great seriousness.

"Because you'd say no," she said. "And everybody should come to a birthday. Even mean people. That's the rule at school."

I didn't cancel it.

I told Johnny, who went very quiet, and then said, "Your call."

At five o'clock the practice rink was full of balloons.

There was a table on the ice covered in a purple cloth, with a cake shaped like a puck.

There was a pot of spaghetti, because the birthday girl had been very clear.

And a bowl of cucumbers, because she'd been clearer.
