Chapter 23: The Hit
Twenty thousand people went quiet at once.
I could hear the ice compressor. I could hear somebody's baby crying three sections over.
Lulu twisted on my lap and pushed her mask up.
"Mommy. Why is Daddy lying down?"
"He's resting, bug."
"On the ice?"
Stevie was on her knees beside him with one hand flat on his back.
The team doctor came out behind her, slipping and careful in his street shoes.
Johnny's stick was still in his glove. His other arm was folded under him wrong.
Nobody moved.
The arena seemed to freeze.
My mouth was saying something to Lulu about hot chocolate. I don't know what.
Finally his legs moved.
His head came up.
Stevie leaned down and said something into his helmet, and he said something back, and she laughed once, sharp.
The whole building breathed out.
They got him up between them.
His left arm hung straight down at his side.
He skated to the bench on one good shoulder, very slowly, and the crowd stood up for him.
At the bench door he stopped.
