Chapter 25: The Numbers
Stevie leaned over the laptop. So did the captain, with egg on his pan.
"That's us," the captain said. "We were there. It was packed. I couldn't hear my own line change."
"I know."
"So who's counting?"
"The box office counts," I said. "Somebody else reports."
Stevie straightened up slowly.
"If the official number's short," she said, "then the season number's short."
"Then we're under eighty-five on paper. And on paper is all Houston needs."
Nobody in the kitchen said anything.
"I need three things," I said. "The receipts for Johnny's seats. The scanner counts from the gates. And whatever the box office sent upstairs."
"Johnny's receipts are in your desk," Stevie said. "I've seen the folder. It's labeled. Obviously."
"The scanner counts?"
The captain put down his pan.
"The head usher's been here longer than the building. He loves you. You fed his grandson at the first clinic."
The head usher met us at gate four that afternoon with a printout folded in his breast pocket.
He was seventy, with a mustache and a very old Glaciers pin.
