Chapter 9: The Security Man

Lulu climbed up on her chair to see the phone.

"Why is Auntie Kinsley eating Johnny's face?"

Stevie turned the phone over so fast she nearly dropped it.

"She tripped," Stevie said.

"On his face?"

"It happens at parties, bug," I said. "Eat your pancakes."

My own phone buzzed on the counter.

Johnny. Three missed calls and a text.

"I didn't kiss her. She grabbed me when the photographer walked up. Look at my hand. Please look at my hand."

I looked at his hand.

Up, flat, palm out, at the edge of the frame.

I texted back:

"Tuesday."

Tuesday was a home game against Vancouver.

At five o'clock, the staff hallway behind the locker rooms was packed.

Equipment guys, trainers, the PR interns, ushers on their break.

Kinsley had set up a ring light by the tunnel for pregame content.

She was filming herself in a Number 27 jersey, knotted at the hip.

"Hi, Glaciers family! Tonight I'm supporting my man..."

I walked straight into her shot.

"Turn it off."

She kept filming. She smiled at me past the phone.

"Everyone, this is my big sister. She makes the smoothies."

A couple of interns laughed nervously.

I held up my phone with her post on it, zoomed in on the corner.

On Johnny's flat palm.

"This is a man saying no," I said. Loud. Clear. "You grabbed him while he was holding you off. Then you posted it at one in the morning."

The hallway got quiet.

Kinsley's smile didn't move. Her eyes did.

"That's a wave," she said.

"He's waving you away."

"You're jealous." She tipped her head, sweet as poison. "You've always been jealous. Dad says you were the charity case of the family, even before you got yourself knocked up in a hotel."
