Chapter 21: The Press Conference
The press hall on Starline's ground floor held three hundred reporters, and every seat was taken.
Ha-jun sat at a long table with Park Mi-sook on his left and Seung-ho on his right.
Flashes went off in a white rain.
In the front row sat Director Choi Dae-sik, in a navy suit, with his hands folded over his stomach.
He wore the same round smile as always.
Ha-jun smiled back at him.
Park took the microphone first.
"Eleven weeks ago, a photograph showed Lim Ha-jun with a woman outside his building," she said. "Starline said she was his sister. Nobody believed us. So we brought her."
A side door opened.
A woman in light-blue hospital scrubs walked to the stage steps, holding a phone.
She was twenty-nine years old, tired, and plainly furious that she had been dragged from her shift.
She bowed once, hard.
"I'm his sister," she said into the room. "I'm a nurse at a hospital in Mapo. This is a photo of the two of us from that night, with the time on it." She held it up for the cameras. "He had a fever of thirty-nine degrees. Please leave my brother alone."
She walked off again without waiting for questions.
