Chapter 22: The Stage

The studio in Sangam held two thousand people, and they started screaming before the lights came up.

ARCLIGHT opened with "Static."

Ha-jun stood in the center in the silver jacket, with Min-seok on his right and the other three behind him.

The first beat hit him in the chest.

He had performed this song forty times.

Tonight every line of it meant something different.

He sang it to the whole hall, and the hall sang it back, a wall of sound and light sticks.

He didn't look at the front row until the second chorus.

When he did, he found Seung-ho.

He stood in the aisle seat of row C, in a plain black coat, with no tablet, no earpiece, and no work in his hands.

In his left hand he held a silver light stick, upside down.

Ha-jun lost a note of the harmony for the first time in five years, and Min-seok covered it without blinking.

When the last song ended, the screens went dark, and the crowd chanted for more.

The stage manager signaled a stool, a guitar, and a single spotlight.

Ha-jun walked out alone, in his shirtsleeves, and sat.

"This one isn't on the album," he said into the microphone.

The hall quieted at once.

"I wrote it about two weeks ago, in a room with bad curtains. It's called 'One Exception.'"
