Chapter 18: The Gala
Three hundred donors stood in the main hall of the Harcourt on Saturday night, and not one of them was looking at the crown yet.
They were looking at Sam.
He came through the doors at eight o'clock in a rented tuxedo that fit him.
He wore a mustard-yellow necktie that I had picked out myself.
His head was shaved and his beard was trimmed.
He walked down the middle of the room with his hands at his sides.
The Society's members, in their red and gold, bowed as he passed.
He nodded to each of them, politely, and kept walking.
At the far end of the hall stood a stage with a velvet cushion on it.
Beside it was a stand holding a long robe heavy with gold thread.
The crown lay on the cushion, out of its case, with the red stone catching the chandeliers.
Leland stood beside it in a dinner jacket and a purple tie, pink and shining, with the Society's president at his elbow.
He tapped the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said. "Tonight, after sixteen hundred years, the Crown of Tessar returns to its rightful hands."
A murmur went through the hall.
"Your Majesty," Leland said, and he swept an arm toward the robe. "If you will."
Sam stopped at the foot of the stage.
I stood at the side of the room with my ten minutes of notes crumpled in my fist.
I watched him look at the robe, and at the president, and at the red stone.
He climbed the steps.
He did not put on the robe.
He picked up the crown in both hands, and he turned to face the room.
The hall went silent.
"My name is Sam Tessar," he said. "I am the night guard of this museum."
