Chapter 15: The Emperor's Bed

The Emperor lay in a bed the size of a small boat, under a coverlet of yellow silk.

He was hardly there.

His cheeks had sunk, his lips were gray, and his breath came in short wet pulls.

Shuang knelt beside him with his hand in both of hers.

"Father," she said. "Father, I am here."

His eyes did not open.

Chu stood at the foot of the bed with the fur still on his shoulders.

They had ridden through the night and the next day with Han in chains behind them.

He had seen almost nothing of the road.

He was seeing this.

Two physicians in blue stood at the other side, wringing their hands.

At the head of the bed, in dark silk, stood Chancellor Gu.

He had been waiting for them.

"Grand Marshal," he said, with a grave bow. "Your Highness. How kind of you to come. His Majesty has been asking for you."

"His Majesty is not awake," said Shuang.

"In his dreams."

"You will step away from my father."

"Highness, I am the Regent of the Council by the Emperor's own hand. I will step away when he wakes."
