Chapter 23: The Throne He Didn't Take
Chu looked at the golden seal in the old man's hands for a long time.
The Square waited.
He had sat on a throne for a thousand years, in the Upper Realm, on the highest of the Nine Heavens.
It was a very cold chair.
"Majesty," he said. "I thank you. I cannot take it."
A gasp went through the crowd.
"I did not bring you back from the grave to give you a gift," said Ning Hongyi dryly. "I did it because I have no other son."
"You have a daughter."
"She will not sit on it. She has told me so, twice, and in language I did not know she had."
Shuang smiled into her sleeve.
"Then give the seal to the Council," said Chu. "Let them pick a regent who has not been bought. Let the boy in yellow go home to his mother. Make the Northern Army yours again. I will serve as its Marshal for as long as you like."
"And for yourself?"
"One thing."
"Name it."
Chu turned.
He was a mortal man in a sling, with blood still dried in the creases of his ear, standing on a dais in front of the whole city.
He turned to Ning Shuang, and went down on one knee.
The Square went so quiet that he heard the banners snap.
