Chapter 22: The Gate Falls
The Southern Gate stood open to the dawn, and the whole Heavenly Host filled the plaza below it.
Forty thousand soldiers in silver, blue and gold stood in ranks, with the Throne's yellow banner over their heads.
Han came down the gate stairs with Mo at his side.
He wore a plain white robe.
The collar hung open a little too far, and anyone with eyes could see the dark mark on his collarbone.
Anyone could see the matching one at the base of Mo's neck.
Nobody said a word.
The Emperor himself had come.
He sat on a plain chair at the foot of the gate, an old man in a simple robe.
There was no screen and no herald, only a stick across his knees.
At his feet knelt Fu Linghai, in gold armor, with a Throne guard at each shoulder.
His silver beard was slightly crooked.
Two long wooden cases lay on the ground before him.
"Open them," said the Emperor.
Fu's guards opened them.
