Chapter 23: Mine and Yours

Han locked the door of his bedchamber, and leaned on it with his eyes shut.

Mo's hand was bound in a strip of white silk, and it had stopped bleeding on the way up the stairs.

"You were quiet in the plaza," Han said.

"I was thinking."

"Of what?"

"That you'll take the seal tomorrow."

Han opened his eyes.

Mo stood in the middle of the room under the lamp, huge and still.

The black bed was behind him, with the old chains coiled at its foot.

He was trying to look calm.

Han knew his face now well enough to see through it.

"I'm not taking the seal," Han said.

Mo said nothing.

"I'm giving it up. The sword, the rank, the Host. Qin Shu can have the Azure Gate if he wants it."

"I have commanded armies for two hundred years, for a Court that let a man like Fu live."

"You love that Host."

"I loved being useful to it. It's not the same."

Mo looked at the floor.

"I will not ask you to give it up," he said. "You were made to lead."

"Keep it. I'll come to the Fort. I'll sleep in the cell if I have to."

"Xuanyi."

"Don't leave your life because of what I am to you."

"I'm not leaving it because of you. I'm leaving it for me."

Han crossed the room.

"I don't want any other life but this one."

He stopped in front of Mo, close enough to feel the heat coming off him.
