Chapter 24: The Heart Beats Twice
The antechamber of the Frost Tomb had a rug now.
It was a thick red rug from the Black Tide markets, laid over the black glass floor.
On it stood a low table, two cushions and a jar of the wine Mo had smuggled in four hundred years ago.
The ice walls had thawed to the color of a clear sky.
Warm water ran down them in thin bright threads, and the round room glowed gold.
Han stood in the doorway of the inner chamber, rubbing his wet hair with a cloth.
The Azure Gate seal was gone from his sleeve.
Qin Shu wore it now, and wrote to him once a week to complain about the paperwork.
Wen Qi had gone off to the tide kitchens to bully the cooks.
For the first time in four hundred and twelve years, nobody needed Han for anything at all.
"You are staring," said Mo.
He sat on the edge of the big black bed in the inner room, with a cup in his hand.
He wore loose trousers and nothing else.
His hair was drying in a white sheet down his back.
"I'm looking at what I own."
"I thought that was the arrangement."
"It is." Han dropped the cloth. "Put the cup down."
Mo set it on the floor and held out his arms.
Han crossed the room in three steps and went into them.
They kissed standing, then kneeling on the furs, then lying down, with the lamp throwing gold across their skin.
It was lazy, and sweet, and thorough.
Mo kissed like a man with nothing in the world to hurry for.
His mouth went down Han's jaw, to his throat, to the dark mark that was still fading on his collarbone.
"I like this one," Mo murmured.
"I like yours."
"Let me see it."
