Chapter 24: Intern
"No," I said.
The chairman waited, because he had known me a long time.
"Tell the board thank you," I said. "Tell them the answer is no, and that it won't change by Friday."
"May I ask why?"
"Fourteen people are still in the middle of this."
"A woman who runs them from New York is the same woman who signed at midnight and never looked up."
"You'd be giving up a very large office."
"I've been giving those away lately."
He made a sound that was nearly a laugh.
"I told them you would refuse," he said. "I lost a dinner on it."
"I'll buy you the dinner."
"You'll buy me a very long vacation."
He hung up.
Cullen was awake, propped on one elbow, watching me with gray, unreadable eyes.
"You heard that," I said.
"I heard the end."
"I'm telling you before I did it. I'd like to keep telling you before."
"You didn't ask me whether I wanted you to stay."
"I didn't have to."
He pulled me back down against him and said nothing for a while.
