Chapter 22: New Year's Eve
I stood behind the register holding the little blue box.
The nervous man waited for his change.
The apprentice was buzzing in the back. Knox was bent over a woman's shoulder in the first chair, drawing a heart, not looking up.
I didn't open it.
I wanted to so badly my fingers itched.
I put it back exactly where it was, under the tray, and gave the nervous man his change in fives.
"You okay?" he said. "You look like you saw a ghost."
"I'm great," I said. "Text her back."
That night I lay awake next to Knox and thought about the box.
Ask me when I'm not covered in paint.
He'd listened.
Of course he'd listened. He always listened.
He was going to wait for the right day, and do it perfectly, and I'd say yes and cry.
And it would be lovely.
And it would be one more time I waited for him to come to me.
I'd kissed him first, over a napkin moose, and I had never once been sorry.
That was who I was.
I'd almost let a thread talk me out of it.
