Chapter 20: The Vineyard Next Door
Tommaso's hand closed over mine on the table.
"Don't," I said. "He wants you to."
Raffaele stood up and walked over with his glass.
The card players put their cards face down to watch.
"Livia," he said in Italian, warmly, as if we'd met at a christening. "Welcome to Piedmont. How's the Italian? Still perfect?"
"Still perfect," I said. "How's the bail?"
A card player snorted.
Raffaele's smile didn't move.
"Here, nobody cares about a few papers in New York. Here I'm a Bellandi from Alba. You're a tourist."
He tipped his head at Tommaso.
"And you brought the farmer home. Good. He can watch."
"Watch what?" Tommaso said.
"My harvest. Next to yours. My wine. Next to yours." He drank. "Your brother sells cheap, Ferri. I wonder what else he'll sell."
Tommaso's chair scraped back.
I put my hand flat on his chest without looking at him.
"Raffaele," I said, pleasantly, in Italian. "Last time you laughed at me in front of a room, you left it in handcuffs. Enjoy your wine."
