Chapter 32: May Seventh
Nobody in Da Pina moved.
Pina's eggs started to smoke in the pan.
Tommaso didn't notice.
He was standing at the stove with the spatula in his hand, looking at my grandmother.
"You read my letters," he said.
"Three times," said Nonna. "Your spelling is terrible in English."
Across the table, his mother put the newspaper down.
"He wrote those at my kitchen table," she said. "I told him not to send them. I said nobody in New York reads letters from farmers."
"I do," said Nonna.
The two of them looked at each other.
Then they both picked up the newspaper again.
I turned to my grandmother.
"You put me on the piano," I said. "On purpose."
"Where else would I put you? You never came to the house."
"Nonna, I was engaged to someone else."
"I know," she said. "I had him looked into."
Tommaso put the spatula down.
He walked around the counter, through the drivers and the espresso cups, to the head of the table.
