Chapter 5: Day's Over

The Fennimore Bay farmers' market runs every Saturday from nine to one, in the square around the fountain.

By ten, half the town was in it.

I stood behind the cider truck with Dean's silver whistle in my coat pocket and Maddie's key ring in my hand.

I had taken the front-door key off it, with its paper tag, and put that in a sandwich bag in my other pocket.

Casper stood next to me with his bandaged hand in his jacket.

"Where do you want me?" he asked.

"At the coffee cart. If Brett looks over, be looking at your coffee."

"Okay."

"And don't write anything."

"I wasn't going to."

He went.

I watched them come around the corner of the bread stall.

Brett had his arm around Maddie's shoulders.

She was in her pink coat, laughing at something, with a paper bag of apples hooked on her wrist.

She leaned into him, and he kissed the top of her head, and the man at the honey stand glanced at them and then politely away.

It was Maddie's day.

Everyone in Fennimore Bay knew about Maddie's days.

I had always assumed the town thought it was sweet.

I stepped out from behind the truck and walked across the square.

Brett saw me first, and his whole face lit up with a smile.

"Len! Hey. You came."

"I came."

"I told Maddie you would." He didn't let go of her. "That's great. That's real progress."

Maddie's smile was soft and shy.

"Lena," she said. "I'm so glad you're okay. I hope this isn't awkward. I told Brett we could skip the market, but he said you'd want to see us doing fine."

"I do."
