Chapter 16: Tomorrow Will Teach You Something
We moved to a study alcove at the back of the reference room, where nobody could hear us over the shelves.
Wylie sat on one side of a small table.
I sat on the other, with the pages squared in front of me.
"Tell me the night before," I said. "Not the lesson. The night."
"It was a Friday."
"I know what day it was."
He nodded and looked at his hands.
"I came over at nine with takeout. You were at the desk with the cards. You had the lamp on and your hair tied up in a pen."
"You remember my hair."
"I remember all of it."
"Don't," I said.
"Okay."
I made myself breathe slowly.
"I asked you to stay," I said. "I said, can you sit up with me and quiz me. Just until midnight."
"Yes."
"What did you say?"
He didn't answer.
"Say it, Wylie."
"I said, go to bed."
"The rest."
"I said, tomorrow will teach you something."
"You said it at the door. You had your coat on."
"Yes."
"You texted it again at 11:02, in case I had missed it."
"I wanted it to be the last thing you read."
His voice shook on the word wanted.
I had waited a long time to say what came next, and it came out quiet.
"I thought it was love," I said. "I read it as a kindness. I lay in the dark and I thought, he wants me rested. He believes in me. I slept four hours."
"Jo."
"You knew the exam was fake. You knew I'd be in that room by seven. You knew every minute I spent on those cards that night was for nothing."
"I did."
"You let me pray over them."
He closed his eyes.
