Chapter 22: Terms
The mediator looked at Nolan's navy suit for a long time before he spoke.
"Mr. Keane," he said.
"You look like you're about to be sentenced."
"Yes, sir."
"Ms. Dray looks like she is the judge."
"I am," I said.
"I have terms."
He shifted his cough drop and picked up his pen.
"Please," he said.
"Nothing makes my Thursday like terms."
I had written them on an index card, in my teacher's printing.
I did not need it.
"Five dates," I said.
"Spread across the months before the trial."
"He plans them. He chooses the place. I say yes or no after the first ten minutes."
Nolan sat very still.
"He pays for every one," I said.
"From money he earned."
"I don't mean his stake, because that's gone. I don't mean the trust, and I don't mean anything my father left."
"I mean a paycheck."
"I'm the CEO," Nolan said.
"You're the CEO of a company you don't own," I said.
"Your salary is the board's money, and the board is me."
"I won't count it."
He took that in.
"What does count?"
"Saturdays," I said.
