Chapter 4: The Doorstep

Bridget's apartment door has a peephole that makes everyone look like a fish.

At nine that night, the fish on the other side was my husband.

"Don't," Bridget said, from behind me.

"I'll handle it," I said.

I opened the door the width of the chain.

Nolan stood in the stairwell light with his collar open and rain on his shoulders.

He was holding a photograph.

I knew which one before I saw it.

"Five minutes," he said.

"You get the hallway," I said.

He nodded.

I stepped out and pulled the door shut behind me.

The hall smelled like someone's curry and the radiator.

He held the photograph out.

The man in the canvas jacket stood in front of the Keane Haulage truck, squinting into the sun.

"My father," Nolan said.

"Gene Keane.

Fifty-two when this was taken.

He drove for thirty years before he bought a second truck, and then a third, and then twelve."

"I'm sorry," I said.

"That's not why I'm telling you."

"Then why?"

"Because you asked me to say it, and I never have."

He looked at the floor.

"In the winter of 2012, the loan on those trucks came due, and your father called it."

"My father didn't call loans.

He built a company."

"He bought one, Serena.

He bought my father's routes for eleven cents on the dollar the week after the bank turned my father down."
