Chapter 13: The Other Jory
Jory did not sleep.
He sat by the fire with his back to the wall and the braided cord on the flat stone beside his knee.
He had not touched it.
It was a small thing, grey wolf fur plaited tight and a worn tooth knotted into the end.
Somebody had spent a long time on it.
Somebody had sat alone with his own hair and his own tooth and worked out how to ask for something.
Jory had never met him, and he found he was sorry in a way that had nothing to do with himself.
The fire burned low.
Out in the grass, nothing moved.
Lucan had gone out bleeding, and the Hollow had been empty of him for the first time since the storm.
Jory noticed the empty space on the bedding and he kept looking at it.
He did not like that at all.
Before the sky greyed, Bix woke and crawled out of his corner dragging his rabbit-fur tunic.
"Lion?" Bix asked.
"He went for a walk."
"Is lion sad?"
"Yes," Jory said. "I think he is."
Bix considered this with great seriousness.
"Bite him," he said.
"That's not always the answer."
"Bix bites. Then it's better."
