Chapter 14: The Fire Line
The north grass burned in a wide orange line, and the wind pushed it straight toward the pride.
Jory stood on the long rock beside Lucan and counted what he could see.
The fire ran about a mile across.
It was fast in the dry stalks and slow where the ground was green.
Beyond it lay the north camp, where the mothers and the youngest cubs kept their dens through the cold months.
"How long?" Lucan asked.
"Before it reaches the camp? Half a day, if the wind holds."
"And if it does not hold?"
"Then less," Jory said. "We can't outrun it. We can't put it out."
"Then what do we do?"
"We take away what it eats."
Lucan looked at him.
Behind them, a hundred lions had gathered on the slope, silent, with their spears and their children.
Jory had never spoken to that many people at once.
In the Ash he had once talked a whole starving camp out of walking into a gas pocket, and he had done it by being very plain.
He turned and did that now.
"Fire needs grass," he said. "So we cut a strip of it out, from the river to the long rock, and we make it wide."
