Chapter 19: Sabra Says

"What do you mean, oh?" Jory said.

He had pulled on his tunic and come out into the grey light with his hair standing up.

Lucan came out behind him, mantle half on, hair loose, wide awake and badly rattled.

Sabra looked from one to the other with enormous satisfaction.

"I mean," she said, "that one of you is carrying."

Nobody spoke.

A lark started up over the river.

"That is not possible," Lucan said. "It is one night."

"It's the Heart Moon, you great fool. One night is all it takes."

"How can you tell?"

"Lioness," said Sabra, and tapped her nose. "I've had two. I can smell it on the wind from here."

She pointed.

She was not pointing at Lucan.

Jory looked down at himself, and then back up at her.

"Me," he said.

"You."

"I'm... a man."

"Yes. And a wolf. And a very fertile one, evidently." Sabra's mouth twitched. "It's about a moon of carrying. You'll show in three weeks. The cubs come early here, and fast. I'll tell you everything. Don't look like that."

"I'm not looking like anything."

"You're green."

Jory sat down on the flat rock.

It was cold through his tunic, and he was grateful for it.
