Chapter 22: Three
Jory woke at noon with a cub on his chest and no idea what day it was.
Lucan sat against the wall with his knees drawn up, awake.
A second cub slept in the crook of his arm and a third on his lap.
He had not moved in a long time.
His eyes were red.
Three cubs.
The first had been the girl, gold and furious.
The second, a few moments later, had been a boy with a head full of tawny fuzz and a very small, offended frown.
The third had come last and quietest, a wolf, with a coat of fine grey hair on his head.
The healer had checked all three twice and announced that nothing was wrong with any of them.
Then she had gone out to be sick behind the smokehouse from relief.
"They breathe," Lucan said, softly, when he saw Jory looking. "I have counted them. Several times."
"That's a lot of counting."
"It is a great many cubs."
"Three," said Jory, and it came out as half a laugh. "Lucan, we have three."
"We have four. We have Bix."
"We have four," Jory said. "Oh, hell."
"Is that a bad sound?"
"It's a very good sound. I'm just tired."
