Chapter 17: Faye's Mother
Daddy stepped in front of me before Faye's mother had put one foot over the doorstep.
"Mrs. Stauffer," he said. "You're welcome in this house. My daughter isn't a witness you can question in a hallway."
"I haven't asked to question her," said Faye's mother. "I've asked where she is."
"She's behind me."
"Then she can hear me," said Faye's mother.
She leaned on her cane, and she looked around Daddy's arm, and she looked at me for a long moment.
I held my rabbit with both hands.
"Hello, Beatrice."
"It's Birdie," I said.
"Birdie, then. I'd like to ask you a few questions, in front of anyone you like. Is that acceptable?"
Daddy looked down at me.
I nodded.
"Aunt Jo stays," I said. "And you're not allowed to hold my hand."
"I wasn't going to," said Faye's mother, and one corner of her mouth moved, which I think was a smile that had gotten out of practice.
We sat in Grandpa's study, her in the leather chair and me on the footstool, with Aunt Jo standing against the bookshelves.
Faye's mother folded her hands on top of her cane.
"What did you eat for breakfast on Tuesday?"
"Oatmeal with brown sugar," I said. "The toast got burned. Faye burned it and said I did."
"And Wednesday?"
"Cereal. The yellow box. I had four spoons before she took it away."
"What was I wearing when I walked in?"
"A gray wool coat, a green scarf, and black shoes with a buckle. The left buckle is loose. Your cane has a brass tip with a scratch on it, and you carry a key ring with seven keys."
She stopped.
She looked down at her cane, and then at the tip.
"Six," she said.
"Seven," I said. "One is for a mailbox."
