Chapter 5: Midnight Court
That night I slept at Uncle Desmond's house, and at midnight I woke up to the sound of people arguing in the kitchen.
I crept down the stairs in my pajamas with my rabbit under my arm.
All five of my uncles were sitting around the table.
Aunt Jo was there too, with a mug of tea.
The second uncle was a tax lawyer, and he was drawing a diagram on a napkin.
The third uncle was a prosecutor, and he was eating cold pizza standing up.
The fourth uncle did family law.
The fifth uncle was a public defender, and he had the loudest laugh in Hartford, but he was not laughing now.
"Objection," said the fifth uncle, when I came in. "She's up."
"Overruled," said Uncle Desmond. "She's a party to the case."
Everybody turned and looked at me.
I stood there with my rabbit.
"Come here, Birdie," said Aunt Jo, and she pulled me into her lap.
The third uncle slid his paper plate across the table.
"Want a crust?"
I took a crust.
"Here's the problem," said Uncle Desmond. "We all believe Birdie. Every one of us. But nobody can remove a wife from a house except her husband."
"Or a judge," said the fourth uncle.
"Or Dad," said the second uncle.
"Dad has already said no," said the third uncle.
"Dad said not at his table," said Uncle Desmond. "He didn't say never."
The fifth uncle rubbed his forehead.
"So what's the move?"
"The move is Patrick," said Aunt Jo, and she spoke quietly, so everyone stopped. "He's not a bad man. He's a tired one. He's been frightened since his wife died, and he is clinging to the first person who made the house feel normal."
